Here, on the last day of #nationaladoptionmonth 2023, I wanted to join in on the @gospelcenteredadoption writing prompt on Names. What a sweet gift it was to be at CAFO last week! My heart feels so full of hope and gratitude for the people who are doing beautiful, difficult work of caring for children who are orphaned or in vulnerable situations. I learned so much from each speaker and each workshop. Thank you Jedd Medefind, Zawadi Morrow, Curt Thompson, Show Hope, Rachel Medefind, Justin Black, Katie Davis Majors, Mamusha Fenta, Beth Guckenberg, Kondo Simfukwe, Shane and Shane, Jackie Darby, Ramona Dudas, Tony Mitchell, Trisha White Priebe, and the multi generational members of the Green Family for coming to the conference and sharing your hearts with us there. And although I don’t know them by name, I loved the global prayer time and the multiple languages and peoples who united on stage to worship God and pray together. It’s here! I am so honored to get to share a bit of my story and perspective on being adopted with the hope to bless your conversations with your child. So exciting to see Michelle Yeoh win last night!! The first woman of Asian descent ever for the award for Lead Actress. And what I love about the film she won for is that it is simply an American film - not a foreign language film, not an international film, just a movie with and by Americans who may have arrived to this country at different times and through different paths, but united together to tell a story. National Adoption Month @gospelcenteredadoption Writing Prompt 2: Community 🌿 What community means now to me is so very different than what it meant growing up. I remember knowing other adoptees from a very young age, in fact probably even upon my arrival from Korea, but I did not want a friendship forced on me just because we had that label in common. I also did not want to be friends with other Korean people just because we were both Korean. And now, I am intentionally trying to put myself out there and connect with others who are adopted and/or Asian because overcoming that feeling of loneliness is more important now than the awkwardness of only having one thing in common. I have also realized that being friends with other people who are adopted or fellow people of Asian heritage (aka - drawing attention to my status as an adoptee or minority) doesn’t mean I belong any less or am any less American. Hello! I’m Erin. I am excited for the month of writing because I think it’s pretty amazing to be able to connect online with other people about adoption. I am hopeful we will be able to learn from each other, but mainly excited just about hearing everyone’s story. I can’t believe it’s been so long since Cafo! I have not had the mental space to process all the thoughts and feelings of it all because being gone for five days felt like I needed five weeks to catch up haha! But here, one month later, I am able to set aside the time to write some things down. It was such a special conference and I’ll be forever grateful to have been invited to speak there. When I was a child on my first bus ride to school, I knew I was Korean and was mad at the boy on the bus who called me Chinese. One month countdown! 🚨 So excited for @orphanalliance Adoptee & Foster Alum panel! We had a Zoom call last week together and I am beyond amazed by the incredible people on this panel. I feel so humbled to be included and I can’t wait to hear more of their stories. Looking forward to Atlanta with you @cordeliadcranshaw @trishawhitepriebe and @zawadimorrow!
